SMS compliance checker

Paste a marketing SMS and check it covers the basics of Australian spam rules: who it is from, how to contact you, and a simple way to unsubscribe.

A checklist, not legal advice. This tool looks for common mistakes in the text of a message. It cannot check consent, how you collected the numbers, or how you handle unsubscribes. Read the SMS compliance guide for the full rules.

What a marketing SMS needs in Australia

Under the Spam Act 2003, a commercial message, such as an offer or a promotion, has to meet three basic rules. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) publishes the details.

1. Consent

You need the person's consent before you send, and you must be able to prove it. This checker cannot see your consent records, so keep them somewhere safe.

2. Identify yourself

The message must say which business authorised it, using your correct business name, and include accurate details for contacting you.

3. A working unsubscribe

Every commercial message needs a simple way to opt out, such as replying STOP or following a link. It must not ask for extra personal information or a login, and you must act on it.

Sending with your brand name as the sender? Australian sender IDs now have to be registered, or messages show as Unverified. See sender ID registration.

Questions about SMS compliance

What does the checker look for?

The basics for a commercial SMS in Australia: that it says who it is from, gives a way to contact you, and includes a simple way to unsubscribe. It also shows how many parts the message will use.

Does a pass mean my message is compliant?

No. The checker looks for common mistakes in the text. It cannot check consent, how you collected numbers, or how quickly you act on unsubscribes. Treat it as a checklist, not legal advice.

Do I need consent too?

Yes. You need consent before sending marketing messages, and you must be able to prove it. See our SMS compliance guide.

What counts as a way to unsubscribe?

A reply keyword such as STOP, or a link to an opt-out page. It must not ask for extra personal details, a login or a new account.
